THE PROFESSIONAL REAL ESTATE PRACTITIONER AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (Part 1)

Mr. Cuervo has been helping the children of Banahaw Cultural Center for a long time now.

The practice of  Real Estate services  during these “boom” good “fat” years , that has brought  with it profitable success and material wealth from our work. It is in this light that I wish to remind my dear fellow practitioners the other aspects of being successful in the practice of our profession. As stated in Sec. 2 of the Real Estate Service Act, the State recognizes the vital role of real estate service in social, political, economic development, and progress of the country. The Declaration of Policy goes on in stating that the real estate professional need to be technically competent, responsible, and respected.

As we can see the need, the personal development and formation of the professional is to include, important aspects of being a human person, with dignity, respect, and being a child of God. It is in the person that the mind, body, soul, and spirit come to play into being one. The unity of our being, intellect, wills, spirituality, freedom to choose, to act with goodness and in search of purpose and meaning. The human person is very special creature and definite not just a material “thing” but as we learn from the Bible, we were made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore it is here were we see why we often seek to transcend the purpose of our work, job, and profession. It is to see the deeper understanding of income, profit and wealth generation so as to be happy, satisfied, fulfilled.

Normally, one learns this truth and spiritual ideas in the family. Family life is the natural environment that nurtures the need to act responsibly, to think about others, to behave properly, to share and grow with joy of being in communion with parents, brothers and sisters. The family is the basic unit of society, and the school of forming values, ethical behavior, and building relationships that respects the individual human person. Therefore, to fulfill the objectives of the Real Estate Service Act, we ought to understand the transcendent and spiritual dimension of our important role and responsibility in society. We may reflect and ask the question about the meaning of wealth, income generation and profits from our work or profession, in the light of our dignity, values, and priorities- Is it for ” , me, myself? ” Does it make me happy? Does my family share in this material success with peace, unity and harmony?

Our growth in material wellbeing, money, capital, properties etc. must necessarily bring with it higher spiritual benefits, greater responsibilities, and concern for the needy, the persons with disabilities, the poor, sick, orphans, homeless, lonely, elderly, the marginalized. It is out of justice, charity and love for others, even strangers that our being human becomes “divine”.  Our contribution to our family, society and nation becomes a reality. Not just words but deeds.

Our profession needs to have a fundamental responsibility of helping others- to share, to give, to be generous with our time, money and wealth. It is in this way that we, each one in his/ her way, can try to bridge the wide gap between the rich and the poor, the strong versus the weak, for those in abundance or surplus  versus our brothers and sisters in need. Do we see them? Hear them cry out? Or do we hide within the walls of our own selfishness by simply ignoring the reality we have around us? We, professionals have to develop and put into concrete, specific and tangible actives our preferential love for the poor. For in doing so, we can move forward in building a society and nation towards the respect of human life, economic development, in unity and solidarity.

Let our development and drowth as Real Estate Practitioners be an integral formation of our work, as a means to contribute with Social  Responsibility and address the needs of our fellow brothers and sisters, every human person, the whole Person, without prejudice to any color, race, creed or political belief . Under all is the land, which is what binds us together. 7,000 islands united as one people, one nation, and our territorial identity. This is our National Heritage. We, Filipinos, are a very special people. A “melting pot” of different races, colors, and deep spiritual, unique, joyful and optimistic. We are a happy people, and we can indeed be very happy when each one acts with Social Responsibility. To share, care and give.

RACuervo staff, Raphael Torralba, sharing his blessings to the children of PGH.

My dear Real Estate Practitioners, let us unite as a family, and together contribute to an active quest for the building of a common endeavor that would bring peace, justice, charity and love for  persons in need, the poor, sick, elderly, persons with disabilities, the lonely or abandoned, orphans and unwanted, especially the innocent children. For it is in the children where the future of our nation depends.
