In the practice of our profession as Real Estate Practitioners, one of the most indispensable and important personal prerequisite is the moral and ethical behavior of each one in the practice of our profession.
Today, the Catholic Liturgy commemorates the entrance of our Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. We see the people jubilant, singing and praising God, “Hosana! King of Israel, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We can draw much good, and make resolutions on how to improve our moral and ethical behavior. This is when we meditate and reflect on how our Lord teaches us by his words and example. We see Jesus, as he enters Jerusalem triumphantly with humility, riding on a simple donkey.
Similarly, when the Real Estate Service Act (RA 9646) was signed and approved into law on June 29, 2009, most of us, if not all, Real Estate Brokers, Appraisers and Consultants were celebrating with Joy! We’re very happy that we were now considered professionals. Our cheers of gratitude to Hon. Rod Valencia, who worked very hard for over 20 years to achieve this dream.
However, soon after, came the contentious issues. Then the protest of the developers who were included (This was an insertion by a member of the Senate, not any doing from Congress). Then the limitation of one broker for every 20 salesperson and so on.
The joy of having the RESA Law turned to bitterness, the cheers into cursing, the jubilations into protests. What was even worst came the unruly, misconduct and rude behavior of some of our colleagues in the industry and manifested itself with shameful and unethical behavior. So, colorum practice became rampant, the foreigners doing real estate services were not apprehended and got away with breaking the law. They even received more privileges and accreditations from government agencies! And never before have I seen so much corruption in the industry.
The similarity of our Lord’s glorious reception, His jubilant entry, and the people cheered waving olive and palm branches, would in a few days after turn to condemnation, false accusations, torture, and the crucifixion, death on the Cross.
Humility, humility, and humility. These are the virtues we need in order to get back in shape. We need the due respect, honor and acceptance of the RESA Law. Like our Lord, as He made his entry into Jerusalem, riding on a simple, humble donkey.
The triumph of Jesus is humble, simple and he rides on a poor animal for a throne, “I am like a donkey in your presence” ( Ps. 72:23-24).
Jesus wants to enter into our lives, and influence our work and profession. He wants us to bear witness to Him, in the simplicity, humility and truthfulness of our work, always done well with competence, responsibility, respect for others, whose standards of practice and service that shall be globally competitive and will promote the growth of the real estate industry.
The Section 2 of RESA Law: Declaration of Policy states that “the State recognizes the vital role of real estate service practitioner in the social, political, economic development and progress of the country by promoting the real estate market, stimulating economic activity and enhancing government income from real property-based transactions. Hence, it shall develop and nurture through proper and effective regulation and supervision a corps of technically competent, responsible and respected professional real estate service practitioners whose standards of practice and service shall be globally competitive and will promote the growth of real property industry.
Let us therefore use the means in order to begin again and return to what is essential that we practice our profession with a sincere desire to serve.
If we are to be morally upright, truly ethical and our behavior becoming of a professional, then now is the time to forgive, to give and open our hearts to all that our integration into one association be archived, with peace, harmony and with humility to change, to serve, to go and pass unnoticed.
Let us unite, for God is unity. Let us not allow the devil to divide us for that is the work of the evil one- to destroy, divide and saw discord, falsehood.
Let us be humble for this is what our Lord teaches us that it is in humility that we learn to accept all our fellow Real Estate Practitioners into one, integrated association.
The excuse of “By-laws” is nothing but a proud attitude of not wanting to give way to others, this is pride. The accusations of not following personal opinions on laws are nothing but to divide. To claim self-righteousness is falsehood and a lie. And when there is no truth, trust and integrity, there will never be unity.
So, let us in this Holy Week, reflect, resolve and seek the help of the Holy Spirit to give us light to see how we can move on and integrate. Let us with the Precious Blood of Jesus on the Cross draw the strength, courage and humility to correct our errors, faults and misdeeds. This way we will once more in triumph, joy, and jubilant celebration benefit from our privilege in being true, noble Real Estate Professionals.
May we all have a Blessed Holy Week!
